No WIN for the Merry (also not a man, but a Hobbit) stabbing the Witch King? That was vital to Éowyn being able to deliver the killing blow.

My personal opinion but with the combination of the scenery and the score, and the response, the Lighting of the Beacons is one of the most epic scenes ever in cinematic history.

2:59 The Smeagol/Gollum scene in Two Towers was far more creative, dunno why you're talking it down. So clever to have him turn his head either way for each character and then to start removing the head turns so we see what appears to be a shot/reverse shot of the two personalities looking at each other. A really original use of cinematic form. Looking in the water and seeing a different person looking back is fine, but it has been done countless times before.

I was in second grade when Return of the King came out. My older sister lied to the teacher and told them I had a doctor's appointment and I was very scared when they told me that (I was deathly afraid of needles.) My sister kept up the whole "doctor's appointment) ruse until we pulled into the theater. That was the biggest emotional roller coaster of my young life.

11:23, completely agree that this scene is a nope on so many levels. My first time seeing Frodo suddenly stabbed and then frothing at the mouth was almost traumatizing. And then to top it all off, his limp body getting slowly cocooned in gooey webbing. Just straight up horrific all around.

The "death" chanting by the Rohirrim has more meaning than you'd think at the surface.
"Death" was a good thing until Morgoth and Sauron tainted it so that the good guys would fear it.
The Rohirrim chanting "death" is in direct defiance of the "dark side".

I really appreciate your insight and these videos in general. But I will vehemently disagree with you on the the theatrical releases vs ext. cuts. I saw FotR 4x in the theater, TT once and TRotK 4x. The extended edition of Two Towers saved that movie. Faramir was done no justice in TT theatrical release. As a fan of the books this was important to flesh out.

What I love about the Charge of the Rohirrim is that it shows when the orcs' strategy fails. The whole time, they've been making their enemies afraid. Ruining morale and striking fear to send their enemies into disarray. So they think that the riders will falter from fear, yet they keep charging despite the people dying around them. They're no longer afraid. And this time, it's the orcs who fall into disarray by fear.

11:47 I respectfully disagree. The extended is much better in my opinion because, rather than Rohan just arriving, they arrive in the nick of time, a new source of hope for the desperate and tired soldiers of Gondor. And it's also a slap in the face of the Witch-King. He had Gandalf cornered, the city pretty much on its knees, his victory all but assured... and then he hears a horn in the distance. It doesn't stop the battle because the soldiers can't realistically hear it in the chaos of battle, but the Witch-King is up there in the perfect place to hear the horn and see the approaching army, the prelude to his defeat. That moment is the beginning of the end for the lord of the Nazgul, and I feel it's only fitting that he's the focus of it when the horn is heard.

Personal win for me: horse actors. Do you know how incredibly difficult it is to train horses to do "unnatural behaviors" like moving around a set or interacting with humans in vulernable ways like laying down? There were some great scenes in the last movie but this one has more horses being great actors.

What I like about the horn of Rohan in the extended, is that it is the culmination of all of Gandalf’s work. For decades maybe centuries he has been wandering middle earth, not allowed to use his full power. A guiding light, trying to keep the strength of men alive by forming alliances by creating situations in which others would be the heroes after he gives them a push. Thorins journey may not mean much here, but actually, one of the main reasons why Gandalf gave him the map to even start his adventure was to remove the change of sauron using smaug in his army.
For many years Gandalf has been the wandering wizard trying to keep peace and alliances strong. Then when it’s all too much, when the orcs and the witch king and the magic is all too much for our wizard, when hope is truly lost, the horns of Rohan blare. All of Gandalf’s hopes come back due to theodan. He didn’t tell theodan to come, he didn’t compel the king. When Gandalf has lost, men work together and do what he always intended them to do. He sees the strength of men return, the alliance reborn. It’s like a parent finally seeing their child succeed, you’re not needed to hold your toddler up anymore because they can walk all by themselves, he doesn’t need to whisper in the ears of kings and rulers, he is in fact saved by them being able to walk by themselves. Gandalf stops being the saviour of men, and instead, is saved by them.

fun fact* When Sam came to the tower to save Frodo, word had actually gotten around that a elf warrior had gotten in and was killing guards, so that is why the three guards were so scared of Sam when he was walking up the stairs and it was just his shadow, they thought it would be a elf warrior and knew they probably wouldnt be able to kill him. And he couldnt just walk in, there were two statues he had to smash to bits so the doors would open. Tolkiens pointing out the use of dark magic even in the smallest parts of the books

I am just floored at the worlds that Tolkien created. The extensiveness of each people and background and languages and cultures shines through. And then in the movies, that masterful way they shot each scene, the CGI ahead of it's time, and the gorgeous and heavenly music and scenes throughout give it even more life.

A tiny detail that I've always loved during the surprise attrack to Osgiliath. Gothmog, just before the battle, tell the orcs to draw their swords, and you can hear that just really a few of them does it. That's because orcs were very poorly armed!

9:20 Agreed in general here. I thought the "We fight!!" line took all the wind out of the sails from Aragorn's triumphant return, so to speak.
Although... I think it could also work if the acceptance line was cut, and then later cut to the "You will not enter Gondor" scene. Sort of. Yeah, okay, maybe not.

Fun fact, in the Tolkien mythos "tweens" is the age group of young adults from the age of 18-33. This is one of the reasons for Frodo and Bilbo's shared birthday having such significant meaning - not only had Bilbo reached a miraculous age, but his heir and nephew was coming into the age of adulthood and respect
