Man there was so much I never got about this movie even though I saw all the pieces, it's probably because that's the opposite of how my mind works. But I literally remembered the dogs barking thing the whole time and never linked it to ransom even though he was my top suspect in the first half when it was still in doubt how he died
I also never got why the 'friend' in the family phoned her up to ask for the money, how they shot it made me think they were forcing her or threatening her with something, never occurred to me that Marta was doing the unintended threatening with the money for her degree, if she was told about that at that point then that makes sense, she flipped for selfish reasons, I never thought she was going to keep it all until right at the end so maybe that's why it never occurred to me cuz I thought the 'friend' would think the same.
Also is Marta the name choice a reference? Isn't that a word for someone who gets the blame pinned on themself for selfess reasons or something? Martyr was it?

i frequently watch movies with subtitles bc i'm hard of hearing, and on the dvd, the subtitles for the confrontation scene has it as ransom saying "stoopid". like, they spelled it that way in the official subtitles. soooo.... accessibility win??

I have a different point, about Ryan, showing a very leftist perspective, because no matter how left they think they are, they care about their rich family and the easy money, and so in the end it doesn't matter, all of it is show for them

The point Johnson made with the immigration subplot is about class struggle, not about whether or not immigration is good. The fact that the only "real" human being of the story are low to middle class people (Marta, the cops, the help) shows that

Something I noticed the more you winned them, some of the phrases Blanc uses such as "in for a penny in for a pound" at 7:00 are pretty common Southern colloquialisms that add to his characterization and only seem odd/unique in the movie in comparison to all the more straight talking Northerners

This movie is so good. And the shift in genre is refreshing. Being a longtime fan of both Columbo and Murder, She Wrote, it's a perfect blend of both types of whodunnits, where you think you see how things were committed and watch the supposed bumbler figure it out, but then the rug is pulled out and the point shifts to figuring out who really did what.

Only just watched it. Marta is very relatable...my only nitpick would be...I can't blame Harlan for wanting to clean house, but to give Marta EVERYTHING? My initial assumption was that Ransom had the will altered so he could then use Marta as a pawn. She clearly didn't know what to do with the money and if anything it made her more vulnerable to the increasingly predatory Thornbeys.
People who over-rely on privilege don't give it up if they can possibly help it....because they can't imagine any other life. My body language is poor but even I could tell that we were dealing with a group of individuals who were now fundamentally broken, they didn't feel they had a future anymore. Giving Marta everything led to a conflict that could have been avoided.

Have you seen The Descendants with George Clooney? I can't remember literally anything else about it but one of the early lines is something like, "I made sure my kids have enough to do something but not enough to do nothing".
In terms of the potential of Marta in a sequel... I mean, the obvious answer is naturally "she wouldn't be" but, well, Watson was a doctor, right? Lots of detectives have secondary characters who help them in various ways.

I've watched this movie 4 times now. Each time I've rewatched this movie I've picked up on new Easter Eggs, foreshadowing, etc. If you pay attention to details the movie can be quite revealing. Which I really love!
For example, Richard actually exposes himself cheating on his wife by throwing the baseball out the window when looking for the hidden letter that Harlan wrote. Next, later on, as Blanc and Marta are combing the mansion for clues he throws the baseball for the dogs in the yard but instead, they return the broken lattice, leaving the baseball out in the yard. Finally, near the end of the movie we see Linda returning the recovered baseball to her late father's study. There she finds the letter open and thus revealing Richard being a cheater. Full circle. Like a donut hole within a donut...
Also, when Ransom is first revealed to us the dogs are barking at him and jumping on him like crazy. The same testimony we are told that when the dogs were heard barking late at night from when he came back to mess with the medicine bag.

Finally, you can also see the painting of Harlan change from having a stoic/concerned look (when Marta is looking at it before her interview with Blanc), and then when the mystery is solved at the end of the movie we can see Harlan smirking/smiling.
These are just some of my favorite ones that I noticed! Others include the foreshadowing of the stage prop knife from Harlan and then Ransom stabbing Marta with a "stage prop" knife and the family getting Marta's nationality wrong every time they mention where she is from.
I believe this movie was wonderfully written and shot. I can't wait for the second one to come out!

Honestly I love the immigration scene. It isin't preaching to the audiance or playing sides, but its showing how superficial and vague these peoples virtues are, and how at the end of the day none of them, both "right" and "left", care about immigration or the wellfare of america, they only care abour looking like the good guy through some faux notion of "greater good". Its also a perfect incapsulation of the shitstorm that is internet political debates, right down to the dumb Hitler analogies and "muh borders" arguments.

8:35 that's a good point because one of the reasons I like this movie is that even though ransom is the villain in this movie he's still so much more likeable than the rest of the family because at least he knows who he is. He knows how much of a conniving asshole he is and he makes no bones about it. Everyone else in this family puts up this bullshit facade of "oh your part of the family". Ransom is an asshole but at least he's upfront about it.

daniel craig proves one and for all that he has range, he is terrific in this film, and Ana totally nailed her performance. Plus the rest of the cast pulled their weight too, hollywood really need to revisit this genre more often, let the actors 'act' and have their head, stop letting the suits pull on the reins.

This movie simply rocks.
I accidently came up with a (minor)spoiler that Chris Evans plays a character completely opposite to Cap, but I didn't suspect him until the reveal, thinking he was a red herring rake. His lines and jokes were so funny.
I'm not proud to admit I first thought Richard was having an affair with Marta (The footage with the notebook shows a dark haired girl, although it isn't Marta upon a second viewing, and Jacob wrongly accuses her sleeping with his granddad when the will is disclosed)
I suspected if she's also an unreliable narrator or something.
