To answer the question of if anyone drops things in surprise: yes, people do that. It's a frequent side effect of my brother and I having considerable capacity to sneak up on people unintentionally despite all logic suggesting we shouldn't be able to. Also, our mom gets tired of it when it happens on basically a semi-weekly basis.

My favorite part of this movie is at the beginning when benoit gets up but uses misdirection by flipping the coin so he could get closer and sit down without anything becoming too "agressive" or "Threatening" it really comes to show how cool of a fucking character benoit is.

I think the main reason Harlan didn't want to call an ambulance was because he absolutely wanted Marta hands to be clean. If a nurse nearly kills their patient, it's going to look bad for them no matter what. Not to mention if they were actually the cause for the patient's death. It'd look horrible for anyone, but especially a minority like Marta. The movie already shows just how little respect she gets from anyone, and it'd be way worse if they found out she messed up the drugs.
I'm not saying the plan isn't irrational or flawless, it's pointedly made out to be, but I think there's a bit more reason behind it than it's given credit for.

I first watched this movie a few months ago, and it has quickly become one of my favorite movies. I just love when moves have seemingly throw away lines early in the movie that come back in a big way at the end, and this movie is full of them! For me the rewatchability isn't as big as some other movies I like, but this was definitely one of the best experiences I’ve had watching a movie for the first time!

You can see the sweat on Harlans forehead as he realizes the situation he is in. It also could have been a method to fool audiences into believing he is going to die as that is one of the symptoms of morphine overdose which Marta mentions.

Okay I think your forgetting something important here at 8:40 yes they could have done cpr but just like you admitted he might have still died. Harlan knew that if Marta was found responsible for his death then the slayer rule for his will would take effect thus meaning Marta would get nothing and the family would get the money which he didn’t want. That’s why cpr and calling an ambulance was out of the question for him cause he wanted to make sure Marta got that money.

I've watched this movie 4 times now. Each time I've rewatched this movie I've picked up on new Easter Eggs, foreshadowing, etc. If you pay attention to details the movie can be quite revealing. Which I really love!
For example, Richard actually exposes himself cheating on his wife by throwing the baseball out the window when looking for the hidden letter that Harlan wrote. Next, later on, as Blanc and Marta are combing the mansion for clues he throws the baseball for the dogs in the yard but instead, they return the broken lattice, leaving the baseball out in the yard. Finally, near the end of the movie we see Linda returning the recovered baseball to her late father's study. There she finds the letter open and thus revealing Richard being a cheater. Full circle. Like a donut hole within a donut...
Also, when Ransom is first revealed to us the dogs are barking at him and jumping on him like crazy. The same testimony we are told that when the dogs were heard barking late at night from when he came back to mess with the medicine bag.

Finally, you can also see the painting of Harlan change from having a stoic/concerned look (when Marta is looking at it before her interview with Blanc), and then when the mystery is solved at the end of the movie we can see Harlan smirking/smiling.
These are just some of my favorite ones that I noticed! Others include the foreshadowing of the stage prop knife from Harlan and then Ransom stabbing Marta with a "stage prop" knife and the family getting Marta's nationality wrong every time they mention where she is from.
I believe this movie was wonderfully written and shot. I can't wait for the second one to come out!
